Wunderlich-Malec Engineering Inc. (WM), an Engineering News-Record top 200 US engineering firm, is excited to announce the appointment of David Allen, PE, as the Business Unit Manager of the Electrical Engineering Business in the Eden Prairie, MN office. David is a proven strategic leader with twenty (20) years’ experience leading teams in the design and development of extraordinarily complex and challenging electrical power generation, distribution, and control systems.
His professional career spans almost two (2) decades since his 2007 graduation with a BS Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Minnesota. The first decade of his career at Wood Engineering Services in the Twin Cities included design development and on-site commissioning of a diesel generation plant for the US Air Force at a critical remote radar base. He led the design and commissioning of the electrical infrastructure for a $250MM canola oilseed extraction plant. The design included a power distribution system for the 18MVA plant connected load and installation of an 11MW gas turbine cogeneration used for utility backup and energy export purposes.
David demonstrated his leadership and innovative engineering capabilities in his most recent position as Lead Electrical Engineer at SpaceX in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He and his team of electrical engineers supported all the power needs for the Florida operations, including:
- Responsible Engineer for a project that added manned flight capability to Space Launch Complex 40.
- Continuously upgraded autonomous drone ship programs, directly increasing launch cadence from 28 in 2020 to over 170 in 2025.
- Responsible Engineer for the design and development of the Roberts Road campus at Kennedy Space Center. Starting as undeveloped land, it is now the center hub for all engineering, vehicle/capsule refurbishment, Starlink payload integration, Starship heat tile production, and future Starship production and integration in Florida.
Clients and employees will benefit from David’s proven ability to build lasting relationships and lead skilled teams in meeting the most challenging electrical engineering demands, delivering highly complex, multidisciplinary projects in the industrial and electric utility energy markets.
