Turbine Overspeed Protection & Trip Systems
We understand the risks when turbine assets are run and tested beyond their design limits. Our experts provide an Overspeed Protection System that supplements or replaces the existing turbine protection system to trip the turbine at high speed, high differential thermal expansion, rotor position, or vibration, or any critical parameter.
Our system is 100% On-Line Testable and 100% On-Line Repairable providing on-line testing and on-line maintenance while the turbine trip system stays fully active, allowing the operator or protections system to initiate a turbine trip if required.
Case RMC engineering experts are specialists in designing and providing mechanical and electrical systems that ensure the unique criteria of each rotating machine solution design includes:
- Independent and diverse tripping for overspeed and other critical turbine parameters, compliant to API-670 (Machinery Protection Systems).
- Custom and redundant electro-hydraulic architecture for reliability, fault tolerance, and integration with hydraulic actuators on the turbine valves.
- 100% testable and repairable while the turbine is in operation.
- Compliant with API-670 in applicable industries.

Our Turbine Overspeed Protection Systems can supplement your existing trip system or can provide a complete replacement protection system.
Our solutions use modern electronic overspeed detection and custom designed and specified hardware. Our solutions allow for the removal or disabling of the existing mechanical overspeed trip system (bolt) and if permitted provide simulated overspeed testing saving valuable outage time.
Constant monitoring of the asset’s speed is provided by a dedicated system, specifically designed for this purpose. Protection of the asset is provided by a custom Trip Block System which, when called on, initiates a trip via the hydraulic trip circuit. The system features include:

Improved Safety
- Our Turbine Protection System eliminates the need to “overspeed” the turbine while completing functional overspeed test and complying with insurance recommendations.
- Protect personnel and equipment from severe damage / injury or worse.
- Minimize / reduce human error that may be introduced during overspeed testing.
- Implement regularly scheduled, consistent testing versus delayed or omitted testing.
- Safety Integrated Level (SIL) rated systems.
Improved Reliability
- Online testing supported by fault-tolerant design.
- Online repair of trip system components.
- Replacement / removal of older and degraded components reducing potential critical component failure.
- Replacement of antiquated, hard-to-source parts with readily available, industry standard components.
Improved Diagnostics, Troubleshooting and Maintenance
- Cyber Secure Communication link(s) to the plant DCS for display and operation in the control room.
- Critical parameters are monitored, trended, logged and utilized for first out trip indication.
- Testing through dedicated dynamic HMI / DCS displays.
- Maintenance made simple through design, instrumentation, and automated process.
- Unsurpassed capability to keep your operation running while testing and repairing.
