- [What is the Foundation for a Renewable Grid?](https://www.wmeng.com/news-events/what-is-the-foundation-for-a-renewable-grid/): Distribution system operators in the US indicate that there are system design constraints that could limit the deployment of local solar and clean power (distributed energy resources – DER) to no more than 10 to 20%.  How did Germany overcome these seemingly insurmountable concerns regarding high penetration of local renewable power? While many scholars and experts debate the approach Germany utilized to achieve a non-high head hydro renewable energy goal of 30%, a recent UL research study uncovers how they built the foundation for this accomplishment.  The footing for this transformation is a self-healing distribution system and restructured electricity market while the foundation walls include an independent system operator (ISO) and distribution system operators (DSOs) that provide for and manage grid price signals and demand response services.
- [What is a Utility Microgrid?](https://www.wmeng.com/news-events/what-is-a-utility-microgrid/): A utility microgrid serves a distinct subset of customers within a defined geographic or functional boundary that provides for islanding of selected loads.  Utility microgrids are used to accelerate investment into resiliency, reliability, renewable power, distributed energy, solar PV, and plug in vehicles while providing savings for the utility. Examples of utility microgrids include municipal utilities as well as subsections of public utility grids serving cities and new developments.
- [How Does a Microgrid Connect to the Grid?](https://www.wmeng.com/news-events/how-does-a-microgrid-connect-to-the-grid/): Microgrids essentially consist of a collection of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).  When the buses that connect these DERs and loads are separated from the grid they form a local Energy Power System (EPS).  When the local EPS connects to the grid, also known as the Area EPS it is done so through a point of common coupling (PCC) as shown in the diagram.  The PCC is usually a breaker, relay and/or inverter which is controlled to synchronize the microgrid and its DERs to the EPS (grid) before a connection is made.  Synchronization involves matching the voltage, frequency and phase angle of the 60/50 Hz sinusoidal waveform of the grid to that of the microgrid DERs so that their waveforms align at the time that the connection is closed between the two grids.
