The ability to review a process in retrospect is the function of historical data collection. Done properly, it provides valuable insights that can be used to fine-tune process parameters, justify process improvements, troubleshoot equipment and identify cost savings. Historical data collection can often be accomplished with a single, local HMI (Human Machine Interface) or through a database server residing either locally or remotely at a corporate headquarters.
Wunderlich–Malec’s project methodology is designed to produce relevant and meaningful historical data collection, which includes the following:
- Imported I/O and tag database
- Standard “off-the-shelf” hardware and software
- Documented data collection requirements
- Data storage hardware requirements
- Trend analysis requirements
- Reporting requirements
- Process operating parameters
- Instrumentation specifications
